Remodeling and addition to an existing two-story single family house for a family with 7 children and in-laws. Expanded the house from 1,820 sf and 2 bedrooms to 4,433 sf and 7 bedrooms, including a new master bedroom suite and in-law suite. A family room, dining room, and mudroom were also added to the house. The objective was to accommodate the various age groups and individuals while conserving space and retaining as much of the existing structure and layout as possible, so as to minimize the construction cost. This required a creative design approach, centered around 1) providing separation and a sense of privacy between the in-laws and the rest of the family, 2) tying together the parents and kids through the common area, and 3) connecting the outdoor amenities to the interior space.
